Ariel Dorfman in Durham, NC

April27 at The Regulator Bookshop in Durham, NC

The Regulator welcomes Ariel Dorfman for a reading and signing of his new book, Darwin’s Ghost. From the author of Death and the Maiden and other works that explore relations of power in the postcolonial world, comes the story of a man whose distant past comes to haunt him, leading him to uncover his ancestors' involvement in the sordid story behind 19th century human zoos in Europe. Seamlessly weaving fact and fiction, Darwin's Ghosts is a poignant, mournful cry for those whose travails have been long forgotten, and a lesson in the power of empathy and memory, and the value of forgiveness.

A “literary grandmaster” (Time) whose work reveals how power and identity intersect, ARIEL DORFMAN has been hailed as one of the greatest living Latin American novelists. A Chilean expatriate, Dorfman has spent his life exploring the reality and dreams of the many Americas. His works, translated into more than thirty languages, include the acclaimed memoir Heading South, Looking North and the novels WidowsKonfidenz, and Blake’s Therapy. His works of nonfiction include Exorcising Terror: The Incredible Ongoing Trial of General Augusto Pinochet. A playwright to boot, Dorfman’s plays have been performed in more than one hundred countries, and his Death and Maiden was made into a film by Roman Polanski. The recipient of many international awards, Dorfman contributes to major newspapers worldwide. He is a distinguished professor at Duke University and lives with his wife, Angelica, in Durham, North Carolina.
