Hosted by the Independent Publishers Caucus and the Digital Public Library of America, the inaugural IndieLib Forum was designed to bring two groups that rarely engage directly—independent publishers and library decision makers—into conversation, addressing a gap typically shaped by distributors and other intermediaries such as wholesalers that often mediate their relationship. The forum convened participants with the goal of fostering transparency, encouraging open dialogue, and laying the groundwork for mutually beneficial partnerships.

In April 2024, I participated as part of the organizing team that hosted and planned the new library–publisher forum ahead of the Public Library Association Conference in Columbus, Ohio, in my role as Marketing Director at Seven Stories Press. IndieLib opened on April 2 at Open Air, an event space in Columbus, with a keynote address by Rebecca Giblin, Professor at Melbourne Law School and co-author (with Cory Doctorow) of Chokepoint Capitalism published by Beacon Press.

Librarians and independent publishers then took part in a series of panels addressing key issues facing both communities, including backlist collection development, discoverability of independent titles, library ebook licensing models, reader’s advisory strategies, and transparency in data reporting.

Throughout the day, conversations returned to shared priorities: improving representation of independent publisher content in libraries, developing equitable and sustainable collection strategies, and strengthening libraries’ mission to support access, transparency, and the public good.
